Do you use the worlds most convenient skincare product?
Do you have makeup wipes in your bathroom or even worse beside your bed for ultimate convenience?
Makeup wipes seem like the ultimate product, they’ll remove your makeup and cleanse your skin at the same time.
But not all that sparkles is gold!

I won't lie the concept of a little white cloth that removes makeup, dirt, grime and sweat from ones face does seem convenient but it's time to take a closer look at what is really happening inside that seemingly innocent packet of convenience.

Environmental hazard aside - make-up wipes are filled with bacteria annihilating preservatives. Yes, preservatives a vital component for a packet that is a dream mould growing environment, where nightly you can put your dirty fingers straight in to remove a DAMP cloth that has spent its day in the warmth of your bathroom (or bedside table).  As you know from my previous email on our acid mantle, preservatives are completely detrimental to our skins delicate micro-biome, the invisible protective shield that covers the entire surface of our skin and bodies. This micro-biome is vital to healthy skin and removal of this enables our skin to be open to all kinds of pathogens and harmful bacteria that would normally be neutralised by our micro-biome.

Now have you ever noticed how quickly makeup wipes dissolve make up? Magic aye!
No really it is because makeup wipes contain emulsifiers that liquify makeup making it slip off with ease but what these binding agents also do is break down the glue that holds all our skin cells together, weakening our skins structure and long term leading to dryness, lines and wrinkles.

Next there is the beautiful clean, fresh smell that makeup wipes have that reinforces how clean and fresh your skin is going to be after a few quick wipes. Reality is, fragrance and perfume is known as the number one skin sensitiser and irritant. Use of these on your skin will lead to inflammation and potentially contribute to pigmentation, premature ageing & cells not communicating effectively.

Now think, you have wiped your face "squeaky clean" with your fragrance filled, make up and skin break down, acid mantle removing wipe and then possibly (if the skin is lucky) whacked on skincare to follow but what you have actually done is apply very (VERY) skin unfriendly ingredients from the wipe to the top of your skin which are going to go to town breaking down the skin and its barriers as we sleep - argh!!

You might not see the skin aftermath of makeup wipes instantly. Most skins can maintain a level of robustness and will try their best to cope despite being impaired on a daily basis. But over time, the invisible inflammatory response that happens each time you use these ingredients is compounding.
The convenient makeup wipe will result in; redness; irritation; dryness; acne; fine lines; wrinkles; and ultimately slowly break down all skin functions.

Makeup wipes are not only full to the brim with harmful ingredients for our skin, they are also harmful to our earth. 1 wipe can take 100 years to break down!! Imagine how many wipes are out there - if you use 1-2 per day that is 365-700 per year! And that is just you!!!

So what should you be using instead?

Have you noticed that professional level skincare brands don't have a makeup wipe option, (they may have reusable cloths, but not a pack of wet wipes), there is a reason for this, professional skincare brands know that there is no way to make skin wipes in a manner that is good for the skin, instead they have cleansers.
Our face should be cleansed only at night time using a gentle none stripping cleanser which is massaged into the skin and then removed using a warm face cloth (clean cloth each night).

And as a side note, I don't approve of make up wipes even if you wash your face after! Those ingredients are still being applied to the skin so its a solid no, never, not even when too tired to wash your face uncompromising NO from me.

So after reading this, I hope you are aware that all that sparkles is not gold and although wipes maybe convenient, they are EXCEPTIONALLY bad!!
